As the year's spookiest night of the year occurred, our Louisville sisters were so excited to plan their Halloween costumes. We asked them what they had in store for 2023 Halloween and how they crafted their costumes; if they did it DIY style or opted for store-bought options. Their responses show a mix of creativity. It's difficult to avoid the frenzy and enthusiasm surrounding Halloween when walking through the hallways. For many, the highlight of the fall season remains dressing up in spooky or adorable costumes, with students eagerly filling out the costume form.

On the form I sent out to students, I asked, "What will you be for Halloween?” and got many thrilling responses:

Some students said they would come as Batwoman, Strawberry Shortcake, a Disney princess, a Telletubie and even Channing Tatum. Each of these costumes have their own unique aesthetic with so much room for creativity.

“‘The Shining’ twins with my best friend!” answered Clover Ebbott '25.

This costume is a very fun and spooky idea that stood out to me. She will also DIY it, which shows the creative potential of Halloween costumes. In this case, she and her best friend can utilize store-bought dresses and then include their DIY touches with matching hair bows and ghostly makeup. It's a great example of our community displaying their individuality and creative ability.

Freshman as Ken and one of the Heathers.

Another example of this is sophomore Vanessa Wood’s duo costume. Wood ’26 and her friend are planning on being Princess Tiana and Lottie from the beloved Disney film, “The Princess and the Frog.” Her costume plan was also a fun mix of DIY elements and off-the-shelf essentials, with some of her costume pieces sourced from Amazon.

Elyse Ramirez '27 opted for a classic movie-themed group costume by becoming "Veronica Sawyer from the movie ‘Heathers.’" She and her friends are taking the store-bought route to guarantee an authentic look for their costume, immersing themselves in the world of this cult-classic film.

Our community was prepared for their enjoyable celebration as Halloween kept creeping closer and closer. The individuality and resourcefulness that make Halloween an exciting holiday, as shown by the varied costume ideas the students have and the combination of homemade and store-bought pieces.

Halloween is a time where people can show their creativity and express themselves through homemade costumes, store-bought costumes or a mix of both. The Louisville student have shown that there isn't one right way to create the perfect Halloween ensemble because it's all about enjoying yourself and getting into the chilling holiday spirit.
