Track takes determination, spirit and discipline. During this spring season, 42 students decided to lace up in spikes and join the track team. Track is an individual sport where athletes are either doing sprints, middle-distance, long-distance, hurdles or relays.

Throughout the season, six seniors, Tatem Adessi, Stevie Carmona, Cynea Casidsid, Caitlyn Iaccino, Erin Moews and Phoebe LaFrance, are being acknowledged for their accomplishments, hard work and dedication to the team. They are all vital components that will be missed in the upcoming season.

“Some of the things that I look forward to every day during track season is the carpool with my teammates and the feeling of accomplishment after the workout is done” said senior Phoebe LaFrance ’23.  Her favorite race is the 400 and her favorite memory during track is “either the bus rides to the meets with my friends or after I finish my race having all my friends come up to me and give me a hug while saying good job.”

This team helps lift each other up and unite “like a family,” described freshman Kylie Marchewka’26. ”We are all there for each other and always there to support one another when it gets hard.”

Not only is the team like a family, but it also maintains “a competitive atmosphere that makes you strive to do your best and everyone is super supportive” said Elizabeth Mesirow ’26 used to describe this track season.

“To sum up the season the best things about joining the track team are the friends you can make, the united community atmosphere, and most importantly the energy on meet days” noted Erin Moews ’23.

One of the many opponents the Royals faced this season were the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers. The Royals defeated Sierra Canyon at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. Varsity won 50 to 31 while Junior Varsity won 29 to 11. Throughout the meet, many of our own athletes placed first in order to secure the win.

As an all girls school it is important that we have female pioneers to take inspiration from in the Track and Field world such as Allyson Felix, Florence Delorez, Emma Coburn as well as new faces like Sydney McLaughlin and Athing Mu. They are all very decorated athletes with countless olympic medals, championships and broken records.

In the sport of Track and Field, Allyson Felix has broken numerous records and is the most decorated female track athlete of all time. Her impressive resume consists of 20 career medals in the olympics, seven were individual events and 13  were from team relays. Felix was known for being a 100, 200 and 400 meter athlete. Her times consisted of 10.89 seconds in the 100, 21.69 seconds in the 200 and 49.26 seconds in the 400. She has set the standards for future generations like the Louisville athletes to accomplish greatness.

Another up and coming Track star is Athing Mu. She is only 20 years old, which is only a few years older than the Royal athletes. She is the youngest woman in history to own Olympic and world titles in an individual track and field event. Mu is yet to be defeated on a professional stage since January 2022, leaving her with a thirteen race win streak.

She even impresses her own teammates who describe her style of run as “poetry in motion – just the smoothest runner I’ve probably ever seen,” said Sydney McLaughlin, who is the 400-meter hurdles world record holder, about her teammate. She also adds that “she has so much ahead of her.”

The sky’s the limit in track and field, so the Royals have many strong women to look up to and follow in their careers. There is only one meet left in season for the Royals, as they travel to take on the Chaminade Eagles March 20th at 3pm. Make sure to come out and support our runners before they venture into CIF. Go Royals!
