Are you looking for new and exciting places to visit this summer? If so, this guide will help you on your quest to find the perfect summer getaway. This list includes cities in California that are easily accessible and less than 5 hours away from LA. I’ve also included recommendations on where you can eat, shop and various activities available. Enjoy!
Ojai
The delightful town of Ojai is located in Ventura County, about 30 minutes from Ventura itself. Located in a valley, It’s in the heart of the Topatopa Mountains. It’s known for its pleasant and relaxing climate, as well as its olive and orange farms. It’s perfect for a one day getaway especially if you’re looking for somewhere closeby. In Ojai, you’ll find everything you’re looking for.
Food: The Nest
The Nest offers innovative American dishes and sits in the heart of downtown Ojai. Originally opened in the 1980s, the restaurant was recently revamped and the menu was updated by the owner’s granddaughter. Now they are one of the best-rated eateries in all of Ojai. They offer everything from salads to pizza for you to enjoy.
Dessert: Ojai Ice Cream
Ojai Ice Cream is a must-stop if you’re in Ojai and looking for refreshing and unique ice cream flavors. They are a family-owned establishment and are also located in the center of downtown Ojai. Their ice cream is made using a traditional Italian ice cream machine and they use local ingredients to make their delectable treat. From personal experience, I recommend getting the Pixie Orange flavored ice cream, it’s a crowd favorite.
Shop: Bart’s Books
Bart’s Books is the world’s largest outdoor bookstore. It has been around since the 1960s and stands strong today as a popular tourist spot. They have over 130,000 used and new books of all genres for all types of readers. Many of their books are rare and hard to find nowadays. They also have an assortment of antiques. It is truly a sight to see even if you’re not an avid reader.
What to do: Ojai Olive Oil
Have you ever wondered how olive oil is made? If so, Ojai Olive Oil should be your next stop when visiting Ojai. It is an award-winning farm specializing in the production of olive products and balsamic vinegar. They have many different flavors of olive oil and balsamic vinegar you can purchase, along with some olive skin care products like face cream, serums and cleansers. You can also book a tour in advance to go through the olive trees and production process.
Solvang
Solvang
Solvang is located in the Santa Ynez Valley, or Santa Barbara County. Only a mere 45 minutes away from Santa Barbara, it is very popular among tourists because of the Danish architecture, food, shops and museums! The town was founded by Danish immigrants in 1911 and continues to prosper today. If you’re looking for a unique place to visit, this is definitely it.
Food: First & Oak (Michelin starred) and Bit O’Denmark
If you’re looking for a fine dining experience in Solvang, look no further than First & Oak. They offer a seasonal menu to highlight local organic produce and focus on sustainable sourcing of their meat and seafood. Their courses are finely curated and unorthodox in presentation. They are the recipients of a Michelin Plate designation, which is an award by the Michelin Guide. I recommend making a reservation well in advance to make sure you can enjoy this establishment.
If you’re not into fine dining and couture foods, Bit O’Denmark offers the perfect casual dining experience with a twist. They are family-owned and have been operating for over two decades, offering Danish and American cuisine. The original building was constructed in 1911 and operated as a school until the 1960s when it was remodeled into a restaurant. It is worth a visit not just for the food, but also for the experience of being in Solvang’s oldest building.
Dessert: Mortensen’s Bakery
Mortensen’s Bakery is a classic establishment specializing in Danish pastries. To this day, it is still run by its original owner, the Petersen sisters, of over 40 years. The owner uses old-school, homemade Danish recipes to create delectable pastries. It is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking to try some unique sweets that you won't find anywhere else.
Shop: Jule Hus and Solvang Shoe Store
Jule Hus is arguably one of the most delightful stores in all of Solvang. They are known as the original Christmas store, and they’ve been operating for over 50 years. They sell Christmas decor of all sorts including handmade Scandinavian crafts, ornaments, and more. It is a must-visit all year round.
If you want to fully immerse yourself into Danish culture, the Solvang Shoe Store has what you’re looking for. They sell clogs in every size and design. Clogs are special shoes that provide firm support for its wearer. They are not only extremely helpful for those who are on their feet a lot, but they’re a cute addition to your shoe collection due to their unique design. Grab a pair!
What to do: Elverhoj Museum
Elverhoj Museum is a must-stop for anyone interested in learning about the history of Solvang and Danish culture. The museum’s main focus is to show its visitors the beauty of Danish-American culture and teach tourists about the experiences of those who immigrated. In addition to the historical aspect, the museum highlights fine art and artists of Danish descent.
Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small beach town in the Monterey Peninsula. Located about five hours away from Los Angeles, it’s the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a fairytale ambience. The town is calm and the architecture is beautifully done, with historical buildings still intact. There are also all types of beaches surrounding the town. It's a charming town worth visiting at least once in your lifetime.
Food: Dametra Cafe (Michelin starred)
Dametra Cafe is a Mediterranean/Greek restaurant that is well known for its lively atmosphere and delicious food. In 2019, the restaurant was mentioned in the Michelin guide and has become one of the best rated restaurants in the whole city. Although the restaurant itself is not large, the hearts of the owners are and they do their best to personally interact with all the guests. There is live music to enjoy on certain days and the food is always served fresh.
Dessert: Cottage of Sweets
Cottage of Sweets is the best place in Carmel to get your dose of British sweets. It is a traditional shop that offers a variety of candy, fudge, licorice, etc. They were recognized by USA Today in 2009 as being one of the 10 best candy shops in all of America. You should check it out if you’re interested in getting some candy, plus it’s located in a quaint little cottage which adds to the experience.
Shop: The Cheese Shop and Diggidy Dog
Opened in 1975, The Cheese Shop is the the perfect shop for you if you’re a cheese lover or if you’re looking to get into cheeses. It is a store filled with gourmet cheeses from all over the world. They have cheeses of all different colors, flavors and textures. Even if you’re not a fan of cheese, it is worth visiting to experience a cheese connoisseur’s paradise.
If you have a dog or a cat, Diggidy Dog is an incredible shop worth visiting. They are a special pet store that offers all types of pet products! They have various articles of clothing for your little furry friends as well as food, treats, toys and more. If you’re looking to get something for your furry companion, this is the place for you.
What to do: Tor House and Hawk Tower, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
The Tor House should be on your sightseeing list if you’re in Carmel. It is an alluring magical house that holds history. Built in the 1910s by famous American poet Robinson Jeffers, it served as a sanctuary for his family and him, as well as a source of inspiration for his greatest works. In addition to the house, Jeffers also built Hawk Tower which served as a second home in the nearby vicinity. When visiting, you can book a tour in order to fully learn the history behind the home, or explore on your own. There are various artifacts and hidden treasures to discover. It’s a sight you don’t want to miss because of the scenery and architecture.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is one of the most scenic sights in California. It is the perfect place to sightsee, paint, picnic, take pictures, bike, scuba dive, jog or study nature. There are rare plants on the reserve, and a variety of spectacular geological formations to observe. There are also archeological sites you can explore. It’s rich with sea life that attracts many divers and visitors. Various seabirds also live in the reserve and can be seen interacting with visitors. There is also a cabin that serves as a cultural history museum called Whalers Cabin. It’s a must visit if you love the flora and fauna.
Idyllwild
Idyllwild is a place shrouded in mystery because of its location and size. It is a small town located in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs. Its location makes it the perfect secluded getaway with family and friends. This is your paradise if you’re a fan of nature, privacy and hippy vibes.
Food: Cafe Aroma
Cafe Aroma is nestled between the trees of Idyllwild, CA and provides a serene and unique dining experience. They are an Italian fusion restaurant and offer brunch, lunch and dinner options. In addition to the bistro, they also have an art gallery for you to enjoy before or after your meal. Cafe Aroma is known to be the hippest and funkiest restaurant that brings together all sorts of artistic individuals. Lastly, their patio is dog-friendly so you can bring your favorite companion along with you.
Dessert: Candy Cupboard
Looking for some vintage sweets and handmade treats? Candy Cupboard was established in 1981 and offers just that. It is one of the oldest family-run businesses in the area and they have all sorts of novelty candies, as well as handmade chocolates and hand-dipped desserts. They also have shaved ice which is a fan favorite!
Shop: Grandpa’s House of Jerky and Artpresso Gallery
What about visiting the most bizarre shop in Idyllwild? Grandpa’s House of Jerky sells all types of snacks for you to enjoy, with everything from alligator to buffalo jerky. The meats are marinated in a variety of sauces. Although strange to some, it’s worth a visit if you’re looking for something different to try.
If you’re an art lover, pay a visit to Artpresso Gallery. It has been around for 18 years and they specialize in paintings, ceramics and handmade jewelry. Their collection includes local artists and non-locals alike. Even if not buying, the collection is beautiful and a must-see.
What to do: hike at Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness
Mount San Jacinto State Park is the perfect place to visit when in Idyllwild. Since you’re surrounded by forest, the perfect activity is to hike and see fascinating nature locations which can be found in the state park. There are various trails to try out for different expertise such as Skyline Trial. If you’re looking to enjoy nature at its most raw this is the perfect activity.
Julian
Julian is one of the coziest mountain towns in all of California. Although small, it’s cozy and welcoming. It is located in San Diego County in the Cuyamaca Mountains. There is something there for truly anyone, especially if you’re looking for a mountain getaway. If you’re a lover of nature and forests, this is the place for you.
Food: Romano’s Italian Restaurant
Romano’s is a must-try establishment. First opened in 1982 by a Sicilian immigrant, it has become a staple of Julian. They serve the freshest and most authentic Italian cuisine. They also have gluten-free and vegetarian options available. Their authenticity and old-school charm make it a restaurant you cannot pass by!
Dessert: Julian Pie Company;Julian Tea and Cottage Arts
Julian is known for its delicious pies, and the Julian Pie Company rivals all other pie shops in the area. Opened in 1986, they are most famous for their apple pie but offer a variety of others. It is a family-owned business and is adored by locals and tourists alike. If you’re a fan of pie, or not, stop by and taste Julian’s most popular dessert.
If you’re wanting to feel like a part of the British aristocracy, look no further than Julian Tea and Cottage Arts. Established in 1995, this cozy cafe is run out of a historical home built in the 1890s. Once there, you can not only enjoy a cup of tea and some delicacies but also learn about the history of the home and those who lived there prior. It is a charming location, and I recommend it if you're looking to immerse yourself in the historical charm of the city.
Shop: Crow and Lilac
Crow and Lilac is a locally owned and operated shop that sells all kinds of handmade and all-natural products for the body and home. They have various products for you to try such as soaps, aromatherapy, creams, facial products and more! Stop by if you need some products to pamper yourself with.
What to do: Eagle Mining Co. and CA Wolf Center
Have you ever pondered about how Gold was mined in the 1800s? Stop by Eagle Mining Co. to learn more about the history of California and gold mining. You’ll be able to take a tour in which you’ll go underground to see the actual mines that are over 100 years old. You’ll also have the opportunity to mine for your piece of gold. The tour is incredibly informative and interesting if you’re interested in history or mining operations,
If you’re not a lover of history, you’ll love visiting the Wolf Center. It is a wolf reserve where you can take multiple tours of the surrounding area and learn more about the wolves that live there. There is a Behavioral Enrichment Tour where you can learn about how wolves live and interact with each other, or there is a Wolf Conservation Tour in which you can learn about the different types of wolves at the reserve.
Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach is a very popular beach town located in San Luis Obispo County. It’s about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Known for its lively atmosphere and coastal scenery, it’s a beautiful location to visit if you’re looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy the ocean.
Food: Cracked Crab
Cracked Crab is the best seafood restaurant in all of Pismo Beach. It's a casual dining establishment, but its food is anything but casual. They serve the finest and freshest seafood since 1999. They serve local fish daily and use local produce and butcher services. For those who aren’t interested in seafood, they have meat and vegetarian options as well.
Dessert: Crave Mini Donuts
Crave Mini Donuts is the cutest gourmet pop-up donut shop in all of Pismo Beach. They serve the Central Coast of Southern California so you might find them in other areas too. Shop: Pismo Beach Outlets
If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for discounted goods of your favorite brands, the Pismo Beach Outlets are perfect for you. Brands such as Vans, Pacsun, Hot Topic and Nike are located there. Since it’s an outlet there are many options available and are all discounted at a much lower price than regular stores. The perfect place if you’re looking to save money!
What to do: Pismo Pier, Monarch Butterfly Grove and ATV
The pier is a wonderful place to visit if you’re looking for somewhere to walk around and mingle. There are many street food vendors, and you can even rent a bike. You can also take a dip in the ocean and surf. If you’re into fishing, there’s fishing gear available to rent at the nearby shops. Take a stroll along the beach while you enjoy some street food or dessert; enjoy the sun and local atmosphere. Lastly, there are many cafe options available as well if you’re looking to sit down and eat.
The Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is a must-visit because they receive over 10 thousand butterflies annually. It is one of the five locations where Monarch butterflies migrate to and seek refuge from the cold. The best time to visit it is late October to February if you want to see the max capacity of butterflies.
If you want to rent an ATV, a.k.a. a motorbike, for a day or a couple of hours, Steve’s ATV Rentals is your best bet. They offer ATVs of various prices and sizes and you can enjoy riding in the nearby dunes with your friends or family, or even by yourself!
