Sasha Petrovicheva '23

News Editor and Social Media Coordinator

Nona was only 23 when she established her very own salon, Nona’s Hair Studio. Nona’s salon offers everything from haircuts and color, extensions, treatments, special event makeup and hair, waxing, nail services, etc. Nona uses only the highest quality tools and products for her clients, while keeping prices reasonable and affordable.

She was always interested in beauty during high school, her first passion being makeup. Her mom is a hairdresser as well, so she grew up surrounded by the influences of the beauty industry. At an early age, Nona became fascinated with all things beauty, and she began to experiment with makeup and hairstyling.

Her family immigrated from Armenia when she was only nine in order to gain new opportunities and freedom, for which she is extremely grateful for. She hopes America continues to thrive and bless others with the same opportunities she was given.

She graduated from Glendale High where she started focusing on cosmetology, taking extra classes in high school that secured her future in becoming a hairdresser. She got her cosmetology license from The International Academy of Cosmetology and took many master classes from various cosmetology academies and well known critics.

Prior to starting her business, she worked for five years at a salon where she gained valuable experience that furthered her interest in starting her own business. Nona built her brand from the ground up but faced many obstacles during her early years, such as having no investors or anyone else to help her out financially

Everything in her salon in regards to her brand was done by her, out of pocket and from scratch. She vividly recalls having to rent a car, buying her own tools and furniture for the salon, and furnishing the salon by herself. Although she has worked in the industry before, it was her first time establishing a business, yet she was able to persevere and attain a license for her salon.

Nona’s Hair Studio is a perfect environment for younger clients because of the enthusiastic and always adapting staff. She and her staff work hard to keep up with the latest trends, even working with numerous celebrities such as Victoria Justice, Elle Dan Jean, and Kyle Kittredge, as well as various other musicians and performers.

Her biggest piece of advice for young girls who are struggling is to not doubt who they are. Nona herself is a devout Christian, and many of her beliefs stem from her faith.

“[I hope] that girls understand that they’re beautiful because they were created in the perfect image of God.”

She wants girls all over the world to love themselves and be confident. She desires for young women to not be discouraged by social media and by the fake portrayal of beauty, as well as the unrealistic expectations that come with it. Many celebrities and influencers use filters, heavily edit their pictures, as well as pay for plastic surgery and different cosmetic procedures. While Nona isn’t against any of that, she believes that girls are beautiful just the way they are and that perfection stems from within, rather than from fake social media standards.

For young girls who are interested in working in the beauty industry, Nona recommends interning at a salon and spending time with professional cosmetologists. Taking beauty master classes is also a great idea.

She also highly advocates for the use of social media as a business platform.

“Social media is your 'business card,'” said Nona.

Her Instagram has thousands of followers, which helps her not only gain more business for her salon, but also build her reputation as an influential hairdresser. By using social media wisely, she is able to make herself more reputable in the beauty world and to the public.

Nona grew up in a vastly different time and during her high school years, beauty was very different compared to now. Since social media wasn’t prevalent before the 2000s, everyone looked to TV shows and movies, creating their image from that.

“We all shaved off our eyebrows and then drew on thin lines with our eyebrow pencils, all in the name of beauty.”

Nowadays, bushy and natural eyebrows are seen as perfect, and many even get microblading to semi-permanently fill in their sparse brows.

Nona is inspired by 4 things in her life; her beautiful family, her children, God and heaven. Her faith inspires her to be herself and do what she loves.

“the biggest hope I have for the future of the beauty industry is that realness flourishes.”

She dislikes fake beauty standards and wishes that elegance is valued more and pursued, rather than obscurity and vulgarness. She cherishes being classy and hopes that young girls aspire to seek that within themselves.
