Tennis is much more than cute skirts and visors. Tennis itself has a history of proving the power of women not only in today’s society but decades ago as well. Two of the biggest names that probably come to your mind when you think of tennis are Serena Williams and Billie Jean King.

Serena Williams is one of the biggest tennis players today holding four olympic gold medals with a wide range of other titles, owning over 70 along with 90 plus championships. Billie Jean King is one of the best tennis players of all time, holding a spot in the tennis hall of fame. While also holding a large number of titles and championships, her most notable is the Battle of the Sexes where she defeated Bobby Riggs, also one of the biggest names in tennis at the time.

As the fall semester moves into full swing so does Louisville’s very own tennis team. There are 15 girls on the team ranging across all grade levels. Some have played for many years while others are trying out tennis for the very first time. Many of the girls even play outside of practice and fully commit to the sport in their freetime. The team is proudly led by their faithful captains Mia Mason ’23 and Brooke Freyer ’24.

Tennis requires a high amount of speed, stamina, agility and power as a singular match can go on well over an hour. The girls here at Louisville put so much time into mastering these skills and to keep up with this physically demanding sport.

To start off the season with a non-league game, Louisville took on their first opponents at Simi Valley High School on August 30. Coming in with a great start to the season Chloe McBride ’24 went into her matches prepared to completely blow her opponents out of the court and won both with an astounding score of six to zero. Captain Mia Mason ’23 and Jun Tian ’23 also brought home a win in their doubles match along with the sophomore duo Solea Novelo and Sarah Mason.

Our Louisville sisters started off the season with a bang and we cannot wait to see where they go from here! Look out for future matches on September 19, September 22, September 27, October 4, October 11, October 18 and finally Senior Night on October 20.
