In the clouds: winter formal

On Friday, February 9th, Louisville held its annual Winter Formal. This is a unique dance because each year it is planned by the junior class council. Last year’s dance was a Masquerade theme that knocked everyone’s masks off. This year, they were inspired by their venue.

“We wanted something that would correspond with the venue and with the idea of being on a flight. We thought ‘In the Clouds’ would be beautiful and would go perfectly with the venue,” said junior class vice president, Stephanie Hage when asked about how they came up with this theme.

“We were brainstorming venues for a few weeks.” Hage continued. We knew we wanted a venue that was iconic in some way – one that offered more than just a banquet hall. Our president, Zoe, visited the Reagan Library one weekend and suggested the idea to us. We all loved it immediately.

The night began with a warm welcome from the beloved Mr. Wilson as he directed the parking. From the car it was a mild trek to the entrance, but it was well worth it.

Upon entering the main hall, each and every guest received a boarding ticket for the dance. This was an adorable touch due to the venue being in the exhibit area of the Air Force 1 plane. Each of us captured a group photo before embarking on the aircraft. For someone who hasn’t visited the Reagan Library since I was a young child, I found this venue both nostalgic and just generally very cool.

The dance started with a sit down dinner, which consisted of a buffet style pasta and salad bar, offering plain pasta (a hit with the picky eaters) and various sauces (for the more adventurous palates). The tables were beautifully decorated with centerpieces inspired by the cloudy theme.

Following dinner, people began to disperse onto the dance floor which was located below the dining area. Not everyone ended up on the dance floor, but, at times, it was booming. The DJ was a new one that I personally have never seen at a Louisville dance before. He played both some classic party songs and recent hits, even adding his own flare at times.

On the level of the dance floor were more drinks and some desserts, consisting of brownies and various types of cookies. There were also more tables, both for standing and sitting, available to those displeased by their seating arrangements or tired from dancing.

On the dance floor, both couples and groups congregated depending on the song. There were two songs designated for slow dancing for all the cute couples on the dance floor. The night ended with a classic hit “Baby” by Justin Bieber, the well known Ludacris rap was sung by sophomore Mathilde De Saint Didier.

“I thought it was a really great last winter formal. The venue was very nice. I liked that it was a different style venue than all the ones I have had during my time at Louisville. The DJ was super fun and I liked how everybody’s outfits fit the theme and venue.”- Senior Bailey Funk

All in all the night was one for the books and a journey well worth taking!
