On January 17, 2024, the Louisville varsity soccer team took on Notre Dame Academy (NDA) at Crespi Carmelite High School, our home field. Although NDA’s team looked impressive in terms of the depth of its roster, by no means did that discourage our team.

The game began at 7 p.m., and the first half of the game consisted of many passes, attempted shots and defensive play from both teams. Outstanding goal-stopping defense was done by junior Berlynn Granier, and resulted in loud cheers and whoops from the crowd.

In the second half, super senior Miye Kodama scored the first goal of the night, with the help of Isabella Rudnick ’27. Rudnick skillfully moved past Notre Dame Academy’s defenders and proved the importance of teamwork and trust when she smoothly passed the ball to Kodama, giving her a chance to shoot, and score!

Shortly after, Metzli Quinones ’25 made her way towards the goal, and proved the utter importance of communication and working with others in the sport. Quinones gracefully passed the ball to Kodama, who scored another goal with her precise footwork and great control.

Penalty kicks are a crucial and essential part of soccer, but they can be nerve wracking for both the players and the viewers of the game. They happen when a foul occurs in the penalty area, and the opposing team is awarded a direct shot at the goal without any defenders. The crowd was nervously holding their breath as Kodama walked up to the goal, but they immediately screamed in support as the ball effortlessly made its way into the net.

The gifted Miye Kodama once again made yet another goal with the help of Kylie Morris ’24. The crowd erupted with excitement and pride for the two seniors, applauding the talent and efficiency that they had for the goal-scorer and the assist.

Towards the end of the game, a fourth goal was made by Morris, with the help of Kylie Marchewka ’26. The duo shares more than just a first name, they also share relentless dedication and technique when it comes to the sport. The perfectly timed pass from Marchewka, plus the unstoppable determination from Morris, resulted in the most perfect goal from the two.

With an outstanding 5-0 win from the Louisville varsity soccer team, the girls showcased their hard work and dedication to not only the sport, but also the team and the school. The spirited crowd was full of pride and enthusiasm for the players at the end of the game, and many couldn’t contain their proud smiles.

It’s also important to note that this is the first time the team has won league championships since 1991. We are so proud of everyone; go team!
