Did you know that it takes approximately 56 calories of fossil fuel energy to deliver one calorie of food energy to you? Or that the majority of supermarket produce is picked four to seven days before being placed on grocery shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1,500 miles?

Those extra miles accumulate and cause harm to the planet.

this is the size "small" of the CSA box now available at Louisville

When it comes to combating climate change or trying to be more environmentally sustainable, it can be overwhelming. When asked how they feel when hearing about the destruction of the planet, many Louisville students and teachers answered similarly:

“It makes me feel hopeless for the future a little bit when scientists say we have this limited amount of time to fix it and it’s difficult because often I find that companies don’t put in an effort,” said Veronica Leidy ’24.

“I think it's scary and really sad that it’s that bad and we’re so young and have so much time ahead in our lives, but the earth is basically getting ruined,” said Ariana Gharagozlow ’22.

“I feel really upset and stressed out;it’s this really overwhelming feeling that there’s so much to do and it feels like there is so little time to get it done. But then there is a little bit of hope when you hear about all these ingenuitive ideas and things that people are trying to solve, whether it’s on a personal level or on the national level” said Ms. Profumo.

Most expressed fear and uncertainty when referring to the future or frustration about the lack of action when it comes to reversing the damage to the planet. While legislation and big corporations have a responsibility to do their part, as a community we can do our part as well.

Since January 2022, the Environmental Awareness Club at Louisville has partnered with the organization Earth Matterz to provide CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) boxes for interested Louisville families.

Not only does this lower carbon emissions, but it also supports local farmers and provides fruits and vegetables with more nutrients than store bought produce! The CSA box from Earth Matterz partners with several local farmers to provide fresh organic locally sourced fruits and vegetables to the community.

Additionally, a percentage of the cost will be donated to Louisville and the Environmental Awareness club at Louisville to help make a more environmentally friendly campus.

This is a great opportunity for Louisville girls to get involved in creating a more sustainable community.
