It is safe to say that the craze of the summer was Dubai chocolate. This candy bar, popularized by the one and only TikTok, has a rich chocolate shell filled with a decadent mixture of knafeh, which is the crunchy dough mixed in with the pistachio cream. These bars are usually chilled and can be bought for the low, low price of about $20.
This summer took Dubai chocolate to a whole new level, or should I say, Dubai chocolate took the world to a whole new level. Dubai chocolate transformed from just over-priced candy bars, to Dubai chocolate covered strawberries, Dubai chocolate milk shakes, Dubai chocolate cakes, cookies, brownies, pastries, ice cream, matcha and even Labubus. Pretty much anything you can think of can be found in a unique Dubai form.
Dubai Chocolate brownies from Crumbl.
As a person with an extreme sweet tooth, I assumed that Dubai chocolate would be my new favorite thing. I spent hours searching for it during the beginning of the summer, and only after asking multiple super markets and stores if they had it, did I finally find it at the mall.
I went to one of the many kiosks and stores you have likely seen there, strictly dedicated to the trending candy. The one I happened to try was called “Dubaco.”
Is it crazy to say I was extremely underwhelmed? The chocolate was overpowering, with little to no flavor of pistachio. The crunch was minimal, seeming soggy and did not properly contrast with the strong flavor of cacao, the bean that gives chocolate its flavor profile. A few months later, after many attempts to enjoy the chocolate, whether in strawberry form, milkshake form, croissant form, etc., I decided it was safe to say that Dubai chocolate was definitely overhyped, with many of my friends not enjoying it either.
However, opinions changed when I was blessed with the opportunity to taste the Dubai chocolate brownie from Crumbl Cookie. This popular cookie shop had been hyping up the release of this dessert with posts anticipating its arrival and teasing us too. I had doubts, but I also had hopes. So, I went to Crumbl, and bought four Dubai chocolate brownies that I shared with my friends.
The second that bite of chewy brownie, rich pistachio cream and crunchy knafeh entered my mouth, I was in awe. No dessert has ever been as amazing and creatively thought through as the Dubai chocolate brownie. It tasted like how Dubai chocolate was supposed to taste. No flavor overpowered another, no soggy knafeh, just pure joy. In a quick 10 minutes the brownies vanished, and when we brought the box back to school my volleyball teammates were like seagulls swarming over a lone sandwich at the beach, all yearning for that Dubai chocolate brownie.
If you did not get the opportunity to try this delicacy, I hope you do one day, because your views on Dubai chocolate could change as well. I have hopes that Crumbl will bring it back as that brownie is a life changing experience for all people who think they are Dubai chocolate haters. Dubai chocolate to me, in any other form, simply won’t compare to the version where it is a brownie delicacy.
