Volleyball: we served

Volleyball senior night was more than a series of games; it was an experience of the power of school spirit. Never in my life have I witnessed such overwhelming support and love for the players on the court. The sidelines were filled with screaming, cheering people and so was the bench.

Volleyball players were shouting “sideout!” to both encourage their team members as well as distract their opponents, the Malibu High sharks.

These girls were putting in their all, whether or not they were on the court. The sense of sisterhood between these players was immeasurable. From helping one another on plays, to supporting them if they hit the ball outside of the lines.

All three of our teams were electric with pride and passion for the game. As the bleachers filled, so did the spirits of the players. There was a sea of support for the girls, win or lose.

Some of the members from the championship winning volleyball team of ’80 and ’81 came out to support and celebrate. When these women saw each other again, they were transported back to the court. Even though this sport is in their past, these women showed great care for the players; not only by watching them play but also gifting the frosh team yellow daisies to represent the passing on of each of their legacies.

Much like a professional game, there were highs and lows, but through it all each player had the support of all their teammates. This, although not their last game, in a lot of ways concluded the season.

For the seniors, this night represented their fleeting moments with their teammates. On and off the court, these girls have immense respect and love for eachother. However, as all good things go, there must come an end. Sadly, this means leaving the chosen families each of them have made. But it is also a happy moment as these girls were able to relive all their best memories and not only rejoice in the past but possess hope for the future.

During the third set of the varsity game, they were exhausted after giving all their effort in the past two. Even as they slowly faded and lost their initial energetic spirit, they were able to persist. Their serves were undeniably impressive both with admirably great strength and precision. Even our very own volleyball alum and champion Ms. Crawley was noting their “great serves” throughout the game.

As someone who is unfamiliar with the game of volleyball, this game was riveting and gave me a new sense of pride in our school.

The girls by the end of the game had left all their blood, sweat, and tears on the court. To say the least, no single person had a bad or boring time. To no shock, they won the game in straight sets, impressively sweeping. Congratulations to the varsity for their win as well as their placement in CIF.
