The annual Grandparents Liturgy is such a special way to celebrate mass, as seeing your grandparents and sitting down to have lunch with them afterwards makes the day even better. The beautiful service was an amazing way to see more of the Louisville community and their families.

Father Steve rectored the mass in an engaging service that captivated everyone’s attention. His heartwarming story of his grandmother, who was an adventurous and inspirational woman, resonated with many students. Furthermore, Father Steve’s pilgrimage to the Cathedral Santiago of Compostela in Spain inspired his Homily. He talked about how he got lost on the way there, but found his way by bright yellow arrows marking the path. He used his experience to tell us a beautiful message: “Grandparents are the yellow arrows of life guiding us in the right direction.”
Father Steve’s words meant a lot to the grandparents who celebrated mass with their grandchildren. By using his own grandmother as an example of his words, it provided the families with a deeper meaning and connected everyone in St. Louis Hall. Father Steve acknowledged the honor of being a grandparent and the wonderful things they do for us.
Some of the grandparents who attended the liturgy have been involved with Louisville for a long time. Gloria Farley, grandmother of Ella Sutherland ’25, said she “had two daughters go through Louisville, and now my granddaughter, so there’s a history that is very meaningful and special.”
The luncheon outside was a warm and sunny end to the service. Tables were set up on the senior lawn with tablecloths and chairs for the grandparents and their grandchildren. Stacks of sandwiches, cookies and coffee were the perfect treat for after mass. It was nice to see everyone soaking up the sun and talking with their grandparents that they might not see very often. Time spent with the older generations in your family is so important to get to know your heritage and learn valuable life lessons from them.
The Grandparents Liturgy is a meaningful service that brings the Louisville community together in new ways, especially those who have never been to their grandchild’s school or those who guided their children here. In honor of such a beautiful event, go out and hug or call your grandparents and tell them how much you love and appreciate them.
