The H-O-T-T-O-G-O dance or even the words “it’s hard being casual when…”, might be plaguing your “For You Page” and this is a not-so-new but clearly upcoming artist Chappell Roan. Chappell Roan has taken the internet by storm and with it, the hearts and minds of pretty much everyone.
She grew in popularity following the release of her single “Pink Pony Club.” This, however, was not the song to put her on the map but rather the release of her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” and after opening for Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS Tour she skyrocketed. Roan’s songs are inspired by 80s pop but with a queer twist of her own. Roan sings of her experience as a lesbian in a colorful and bubbly way.

Many people said that last summer was a Boygenius summer due to the release of their album “the record” as this album took over the world winning them three grammys. Throughout my TikTok “For You page” I have seen people predicting that Roan continues to blow up and may possibly be the next artist of the summer.
She is a refreshing stray away from the clean girl aesthetic and a homage to almost drag queen inspired makeup. Roan’s songs mostly have a funky and upbeat melody allowing them to be easily danced along to such as her song “HOT TO GO.” Even in her mellower songs her lyricism is poetic and her voice is stunning.
If she is the artist of the summer it will be anything but ‘Casual’, Roan is a hot pink in a sea of beiges. She is not afraid of being herself and truly embodying her persona on stage when performing.
Chappell is known for her rhinestone cowboy hats and pink glitter, however, her music can still be very raw. Roan is especially able to appeal to the complex emotions of a young woman as one herself. For many people, Roan is one of the most current artists to gain this popularity to be open about her sexuality explicitly within her lyricism.
I personally hope that she is the artist of the summer and can make this a summer of nostalgia and retro energy. I hope that we can all embrace our fun and chalant selves. Let's make this summer not casual. I say that this summer we’ll be in our mini skirts and our gogo boots.
