‘Twas the night of a Taylor Swift album release, and I could not contain my excitement. As a Taylor Swift fan since birth, a theater kid, and a lover of pop music and good lyrics, I was ecstatic for the release of Taylor’s “The Life of a Showgirl.” And being the number one fan of her last album “The Tortured Poets Department,” I had high hopes.
The album started off very strong with the opening song, “The Fate of Ophelia.” With fun synth beats and catchy lyrics, I couldn’t help but dance!
From the moment I heard “Elizabeth Taylor” at 9:04 PM on October 2 I knew it was my favorite. The beat drop into the chorus truly made me ascend into space. Sure, the lyrics might not be the deepest I’ve ever heard, but come on! It’s like if “reputation” and Lana Del Rey had a baby. It’s the best song on the whole album.
“Opalite” is the perfect song for dancing around your room in your pajamas to make you feel better after a rough day. It didn’t stand out as anything special to me, but I still enjoyed it.
Now, for “Father Figure.” I will defend this song with my life, and if you don’t like it, then you simply don’t understand queen Taylor. “Mistake my kindness for weakness and find your card cancelled,” I mean, the power she has! The song is empowering, it’s compelling, and it’s reminding men of the strength that us women have.

Then it was time for track five, “Eldest Daughter.” Taylor’s track fives are famous for being heartbreaking and lyrically genius, and I was equally as terrified as I was excited for “Eldest Daughter” since I am the eldest daughter myself. However, I was severely let down. The lyrics felt dumbed down so that Travis Kelce could understand what she was trying to say. “Every eldest daughter was the first lamb to the slaughter so we all dressed up as wolves” is great, until she ruined it with the following line “and we looked fire.” And maybe I don’t understand some of it because I’m not in love or whatever, but I was very disappointed in her lyricism.
“Ruin the Friendship,” “Actually Romantic,” “Wi$h Li$t” and “Wood” were nice, but not anything special to me. “Wi$h Li$t” and “Wood” in particular were not my favorites, but I think that is simply because I’m biased and I really don’t like Travis Kelce.
This might be a hot take, but I actually loved “CANCELLED!” Sure, it’s millennial and the lyrics are a little cringey, but I think it’s so fun. The people hating on it just prove that she cannot do anything without people saying something. As Taylor once said, “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate.”
I did not care for “Honey” because, again, I cannot put my Travis Kelce bias aside, sorry not sorry!
“The Life of a Showgirl” was fun and I thought it was a great closing song for this album. Was it my favorite? Definitely not, but it’s catchy pop fun and I can appreciate that.
Overall, I was a little let down, but that was mostly my fault for expecting it to be “TTPD” part two. Although I didn’t find my new favorite album, I did find a fun album to dance around to with my friends. Also, Taylor, please find a new muse that isn’t “your gym teacher.”
