Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a Louisville musical? We always hear so much about the characters and storyline, yet knowing what goes on behind the stage is so important too!
Over the two weekends of March 20-22 and March 27-28, the Louisville actors put on a fabulous show of “Once Upon a One More Time”: a feminist musical blending Disney princesses and Britney Spears. This show required much advance preparation. Since January, these actors and crew members have been working on the performance. In the weeks leading up to it, there are rehearsals that consume all of their time. And up until show time, they have specific ways in which they prepare.

The call-time of the actors may seem like a simple term, however, so many details go into it. The actors spend over an hour doing their hair, makeup, getting dressed in their costumes, and doing microphone checks. What may sound straightforward is very time consuming and takes a lot of dedication. The program has people designated for the wigs and costume design. It takes a lot of work to upkeep the wigs and style them, let alone attach them properly to the actresses’ hair.
Once hair, makeup and costume are done, the actors go straight into microphone checks. Mic-checks are very important to ensure that each person’s microphone is working properly and can be heard throughout the show. Each actor sings a line of some sort, all in a row. This process is quick, yet very crucial to the development of the musical.
Apart from the actors and tech team, the parent volunteers and theater craft also do so much for this process. Each decoration and prop is made with such grace and care. There were three scenes, a palace, Snow White’s cottage, and the forest. The audience can truly see how detailed each one is from the color of the wall to the sparkle of the palace stairs. The back drops and props brought the plot of the play to life and made each scene easy to understand, as things were constantly switching around. The parents and their association with the concession stand and ticket purchases was run smoothly as well, making the experience as a whole very enjoyable.
Overall, the musical “Once Upon a One More Time” was absolutely magical, and inspirational to all students, parents, families and friends. Well done to all actors- and have a happily ever after!
