When people think of track and field, they often picture competitions and the constant breaking of personal records, but there is a lot more than you may know happening behind the scenes. For Mariah Campuzano ’26, track and field (specifically shot put) is built on discipline, daily practice and constant self-improvement. Mariah’s journey shows what dedication to a sport really looks like, and how hard work can pay off both on and off the field, as she just committed to Concordia University in Irvine.
Mariah celebrating after a meet
Mariah has been participating in track and field since the age of seven, training year-round. During the season, she practices five days a week with the Louisville team and competes in meets weekly. Additionally, she lifts weights five days a week with extra training on weekends.
The question is: how does she have time to do all of this while managing schoolwork? Such an intense schedule requires careful time management that allows a balance of social life, sports and school work. Mariah said that she often completes assignments early or studies late into the evening after lifting sessions; however, she tries to go to bed early to have enough energy for the next day.
All this dedication has paid off for Mariah as a two-time league champion in shot put and a recent commit to her track & field career at the collegiate level. With an official shot put personal record of 34 feet, four inches, she continues to set higher goals for herself each season.
Recently, Mariah competed at the Winter Championships, where she faced Division I athletes from across the country. When talking with Mariah, she stressed how important it is - especially with such high pressure - to remain focused on self-improvement rather than comparison.
When asked what advice she would give to younger athletes, Mariah emphasized growth over discomfort:
“Do things that make you uncomfortable. That’s the only way you’re going to grow and build mental toughness.”
This mindset reflects Mariah’s successes and the dedication behind it.
Congratulations Mariah, we can’t wait to see all that you will achieve!
