Do you ever get hungry and realize there is nothing that tickles your fancy? Well, mug cakes are the perfect solution to a sweet treat craving. Mug cakes shouldn’t just be a pandemic trend: they’re easy, fast and reliable (if done correctly). They do not require baking skills, advanced tools, or even a kitchen - just a mug, a microwave and a few basic ingredients that you are sure to have in your cabinets.
These three easy recipes can be made in under ten minutes!
How to make each mug cake:
Combine all dry ingredients in the mug.
In a separate container, mix all the wet ingredients.
Slowly add the wet ingredients into the mug and whisk with a spoon or fork until a batter is formed.
Then, put the mug cake in the microwave for however many seconds stated below.
Note: When making the oreo cake - place an oreo on the top of the cake for decoration and an extra crunch.
Additionally, for the lava cake, put chocolate chips directly into the centre to make it runny.
Finally for the vanilla mug cake, drizzle as many sprinkles as you want and mix one last time before putting it in the microwave.

As we made these cakes, we learned a lot about the difference between a bad mug cake and a delicious one.
The vanilla mug cake had a lot of potential and was the most appealing physically however it was overshadowed by the amount of salt so don’t make the same mistake as me - a pinch of salt is truly a tiny pinch held between your fingers. I sadly added a teaspoon and it was the saltiest cake you can imagine.
The chocolate lava cake took quite a while to cook as it was significantly bigger than the other cakes, so make sure to use a larger mug for this recipe. Additionally, this cake was more of a dry yet fluffy texture and the best part was the melted chocolate in the middle.
The winner was the Oreo mug cake as it was moist with crumbly chunks of cookie, which is perfect for someone with a sweet tooth.
VANILLA MUG CAKE:
70 seconds
Dry ingredients:
¼ cup + 1½ tsp flour
2 tbsp sugar
¼ tsp baking powder
Dash of salt
Wet ingredients:
2 tbsp melted butter
3 tbsp milk
½ tsp vanilla
Extras:
Sprinkles
CHOCOLATE LAVA MUG CAKE:
1-2 minutes (start with one minute and keep an eye on it, add more time in 15 second intervals until desired texture is achieved)
Dry ingredients:
¼ cup flour
¼ cup sugar
2 tbsp cocoa powder
½ tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
Wet ingredients:
3 tbsp melted butter
3 tbsp milk
½ tsp vanilla
1 tbsp water
1 egg
Other:
chocolate chips - put these in the batter before cooking
OREO MUG CAKE:
60-90 seconds
Dry ingredients:
2 tsp flour
2 tsp cocoa powder
2 tsp sugar
⅓ tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
Wet ingredients:
4 tbsp milk
2 tsp oil
½ tsp vanilla
Other:
6 Oreos (crushed) + an extra for decoration on top
