Welcome back to the 1980s! The annual Crespi back-to-school dance was hosted on September 7 with many students in attendance for a night of dancing and hanging out with friends.
Despite the intense heat of 95 degrees that night, the dance was one of the most memorable yet. From 8 to 10 p.m. students and chaperones enjoyed one of the first social events of the year on the Louisville and Crespi calendar. Following average high school norms of frequent shyness and quiet reluctance, the first thirty minutes was spent in small groups or cliques discussing fabulous outfits, the heat and if anyone would really dance; but by the end of the night all doubts were cleared when freshman and seniors alike were dancing as one big group to a variety of music.
“It was kind of awkward at first, but dancing with my friends was so much fun and I enjoyed it. I liked the glow sticks!” stated Amiah Escobar ‘28.
The music played was a mixture of recent music and the memorable classics from the 2000s and 2010s, from Travis Scott’s “Fein” to “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus. The students formed a big circle to see who had the best dance moves. Even some injured students were influenced such as Crespi sophomore Dylan Love who raised his crutches in the middle of the circle and sang his heart out to many 2000s pop anthems.
“My favorite part of the welcome dance was singing California Girls with my friends. Honestly this was a really cool and fun event to start the school year off with!” expressed Noelle Levis ‘28.

Some students were truly inspired by stereotypical 1980s fashion: colorful eyeshadow, bold lipstick, crimped hair and neon fishnets. Camila Alveraz-Cueva ’27 won the night with her black dress, fingerless gloves and chunky silver jewelry; all of which truly captured the iconic look of 80s superstar Madonna in one of her music videos.
“Let me tell you when I found out it was going to be 80s themed I jumped up and down like a little girl on Christmas morning. I had a phase where I was obsessed with the 80s when I was growing up” exclaimed Camila ‘27.
Overall, the dance was a really enjoyable experience that has helped make memories and build friendships to last throughout high school years and beyond that. This themed dance gave students a chance to admire each other’s creativity, meet new people, branch out of their comfort zones and dance the night away. The Royals can’t wait for next year’s dance!
