Cancel culture is a movement of public rejection to stop supporting and removing the status or esteem from an individual. Society usually stops supporting a celebrity or public figure because of something they did that was wrong or offensive. This is especially prevalent on social media, where the removal of an individual’s platform can be gone in seconds. Although it can hold people accountable for their actions, it can also take a toll on an individual’s mental health.

Cancel culture can forever ruin reputations simply from someone speaking their mind and having their own opinions. It is far too harsh and does not allow individuals to have second chances to learn from their mistakes. Negative impacts due to cancel culture involve anxiety and depression as the fear of being publicly shamed can lead to significant stress and worry. The constant judgment from others online can make people feel isolated and unsupported. There is also a rapid spread of misinformation, as well as harmful information that can cause misunderstandings. People have a constant fear of making mistakes, especially online.
Social media is permanent. Once a post is made, your digital footprint will be left online forever. Many people are afraid to speak their mind and express their true opinions for this exact reason. Cancel culture infringes on the right of freedom of speech; there will always be consequences to what individuals say or do. At times, if an opinion stated does not stand with the majority, someone could be at risk of getting canceled.
While intended to make people take accountability for their actions, shame is harmful. People can easily hide behind a screen while making hate comments, so they are more comfortable saying things they normally would not say to someone’s face. Cancel culture is detrimental to society for many reasons. It negatively impacts mental health, infringes on freedom of speech, and restrains people from speaking their mind and giving their true opinions on sensitive topics. Cancel culture often does more harm than good.
Cancel culture shows the influence of social media in our lives because it reaches millions and happens so quickly. People around the world can see the post, comment, share it to more people, and collectively decide to stop supporting someone. It shows how connected we are and how powerful the connections are in shaping the opinion of the public.
