We need an architecture class!

As we all know, Louisville offers a wide range of courses and activities that assist students discovering and experiencing possible career paths. One thing Louisville has yet to offer is a course on the art of architecture.

This is a highly rated and admired class available at Crespi that would be a beneficial addition to the Louisville community as a two-semester art credit course. By introducing a course like this, we would further push the ideal of “women who shape the world” by giving young women the opportunity to explore a traditionally male-dominated field in a supportive, all-girls environment.

To further implement the idea to make this class an addition to our curriculum, I interviewed Crespi student Nick Bonoli ’26 about his experience with the course. In this class, students either create layout drawings or take notes from lectures on the architectural advancements of ancient civilizations.

Bonoli ‘26 explained how this class focuses mainly on exterior design, but at times projects require drawing the interior floor plans which include furniture and other appliances. Their studies focus on a combination of both functional and aesthetic architecture. For instance, the functional placement of walls for structural support. The aesthetic aspects are mostly brought into play with decorations such as plants, furniture, and lighting.

There is one main project in this class that is worked upon during the school year until it becomes their final project. So far, they have completed a few 2D floor plans and site plans leading up to their final 3D work- a house model.

Bonoli ’26 explained how this class strengthens his creative drive by giving him the opportunity to design a house he may potentially live in. Taking this course can help students find their right career path, which has been proven by his now solidified goal of becoming a mechanical engineer. This class gives him the freedom to build what he wants, therefore giving him the opportunity to experience what his future may look like if he continues with the hope of a career in architecture.

This opportunity would greatly benefit Louisville students who are interested in various aspects of architecture or interior design by giving them a taste of architecture as a major or career. We have amazing courses in our curriculum that help many students find their passions, which may turn into majors for college. As an imaginative and supportive community, a class on architecture will benefit aspiring architects, engineers, designers, and other creative individuals.
