The results are in! On March 18, the American Kennel Club (AKC) announced 2024’s most popular dog breeds. Last year’s top five featured pups of all different shapes, sizes and personalities, so there is something for everyone. Grab your leashes, because we’re taking a walk through the world of America’s five most popular dogs.
In first place was (drumroll please) the French Bulldog! It is the third year in a row that the French Bulldog has been #1. Affectionately known as Frenchies, these pups are playful and outgoing, not to mention irresistibly cute with their large ears and smushed faces. Because of this, Frenchies have seen a spike in popularity over the past few years. Many dog experts attribute their popularity gain to the fact that several notable celebrities own Frenchies, including Martha Stewart, Dwayne Johnson and Lady Gaga.
Up next on the list is the Labrador Retriever. Holding the #1 spot from 1991 to 2022 Labs set a record 31 year reign before the Frenchie took its place. Despite falling to second place, the Lab remains a popular pup known for a cheerful, silly disposition. Labs are also celebrated for their gentleness and ability to get along with all types of people.
Coming into third is the ever-popular Golden Retriever, known for its unmatched energy and enthusiasm for life. Like Labs, Goldens are popular choices for families with children, because of their docile temperament and caring nature.

Fourth place goes to the noble German Shepherd, a beloved breed that has remained within the top five for decades. As a German Shepherd owner myself, their qualities are hard to describe from the outside; you must know one personally to truly appreciate the beauty of the breed. However, the intelligence and courage of the German Shepherd is apparent from simply seeing him. I may be biased, but the German Shepherd’s stunning appearance turns heads; the large ears speak to the alert, bright-eyed personality of the breed, while the massive size and strong build demand attention and leave no doubt that this dog will do anything to protect his loved ones.
Finally, the Poodle takes fifth place. With three size varieties (toy, miniature and standard), the Poodle appeals to many different owners with varying situations, especially if you have allergies. This breed is highly adaptable, whether living in a small apartment or a house with a big backyard. The Poodle is also known as one of the most intelligent and trainable dog breeds.
With these rankings in mind, I did a survey of Louisville’s most popular dog breeds to see how they compare! According to 68 respondents, 36% of Louisville dog owners have mixed breed dogs, which were not included in the AKC’s national rankings. However, within purebred dogs, Louisville’s top dog is a three-way tie between the French Bulldog, the Chihuahua and the Golden Retriever! Second was a tie between the German Shepherd, Dachshund and Pug, followed by the Labrador Retriever, Poodle and Maltipoo.
As exciting as it is for dog breeds to vie for the crown, I think we can all agree that at the end of the day, all dogs are equal regardless of their breed labels. Any dog is a light to the world and having a canine companion makes life worth living!
