Los Angeles has a deep athletic history, with various championships spanning college and professional sports in addition to hosting the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. With multiple professional men's basketball and soccer teams, it was long wondered when LA would add some women’s sports teams to their stadiums. That question was answered in 1997 with the introduction of the Sparks and further fulfilled in 2022 with Angel City Football Club (ACFC).
When it comes to basketball, LA may have a deep rivalry between the Clippers and the Lakers, but when it comes to women’s basketball there is one obvious choice for a favorite team, the Los Angeles Sparks. The team began as one of the original eight teams of the Women’s National Basketball Association in 1997 and started its history with Olympic gold-medalist Lisa Leslie at the helm. Since then the team has been home to Olympians, All-stars, championships and even made an appearance in the blockbuster film Love & Basketball.
Unfortunately, the Sparks were unable to secure a playoff spot meaning that their season ended short this past in September. No need to fret, the Sparks will be back in Crypto.com Arena and on CBS sports networks in May. Dearica Hamby, Kia Nurse and Zia Cooke will be back on court in less than a year.
LA is known as the city of angels, so it is a no-brainer that our National Women's Soccer League team is called Angel City. Ever since their first game in 2022, Angel City has been a pillar in the Los Angeles sports crowd. This team has been able to solidify itself as a part of LA’s history in their past two years.

With young local players like Gisele and Alyssa Thompson from Harvard Westlake and LA native and World Cup winner Christen Press the team has a large fanbase in LA. Their season is on its way to the end but you can catch their upcoming matches at home against the Utah Royals on October 20th at 4:30 pm and their away matches against Seattle Reign on October 4, the North Carolina Courage on October 12 and the Portland Thorns on November 1. These games can be seen on NWSL Plus, Bally sports, Prime video, Ion, Paramount Plus or ESPN.
Louisville is also home to so many athletically gifted students. With a CIF championship last year for our basketball team and a state championship for our soccer team, you may even spot some alumnae on these teams rosters in the near future.
