Here at Louisville, our beach volleyball team is often overlooked and underappreciated. This season, the team welcomes a new coach, Meagan Carter, alongside a fresh and energetic team, ready to rep our school and eager to claim some wins!
If you are unfamiliar with the sport, there are a few things that differentiate beach volleyball from indoor volleyball. Apart from the obvious component that is playing in sand rather than on a gym floor, every beach volleyball team consists of just two players. These players cover their entire side of the court–which is a few feet smaller than that of an indoor court–and have to work in close partnership with one another to beat the opposing team.
Games are often shorter than indoor volleyball: consisting of two sets, each played until the winning side reaches twenty one points. Teams switch sides every seven points, and are allowed a short break after their scores add to twenty one points.

The sport is more personal than indoor volleyball, through the small team sizes and because each team is often tasked with self-reffing their games at the high school level.
Beach volleyball is unpredictable (and in turn, entertaining) because of the changing environments players are subjected to. Depending on the wind, weather and location during the game, teams must adjust their playing to fight back against strong wind or even rain.
If you want to support your school and friends in beach volleyball, I encourage you to show up for a game or two. Bring your friends, get some dinner near the beach afterwards, and take a moment to bathe in the sun with free entertainment! Our Louisville beach volleyball team has two remaining games:
Louisville v. Chaminade 4/1
Start: 3:30 PM
Location: Playing Fields, Chaminade Middle School
Louisville v. Notre Dame Academy 4/8
Start: 3:00 PM
Location: Ocean Park South Beach
If you can’t make our games but want to participate in the sport, there’s still hope! There are courts on the beaches you love, and it’s never too late to try something new. Go down to Zuma, Will Rogers or South Beach with friends or solo. Bring a volleyball to start your own game, or ask to join others—people are more friendly than you think! Beach volleyball is a great pastime as summer rolls around. And even if you aren’t sporty, you can participate and cheer others on. The ball is in your court now!
