Today, less and less color is being used in the world. Buildings have never looked so sleek, yet evoke such dull feelings. The majority of cars on the road are black, white or gray. A modern home often features black and white marble, white walls and gray floors. Plus, with the rise of minimalism and monochromatic fashion, clothing has never been more drained of color.
Clothes are central to human expression. From the golds of the 20s, to the pastels of the 50s, to the neons of the 80s - clothing has defined history for decades with their colors making these fashions even more memorable. But over time, clothes have also fallen victim to this “colorless epidemic.”
Color has a powerful influence over us. It has a heavy impact on our emotions because we naturally associate colors with different feelings. Ironically, blacks, whites and grays are commonly linked with a depressive mood yet are seemingly unavoidable in our current world.
Take a good look inside your wardrobe– if you feel uninspired by the lack of color inside, it is time for a revamp.
Fortunately, basics give us a strong foundation to pair with colorful pieces. Start small, by adding accessories like a colorful purse or belt to outfits. From there, you can integrate patterned jackets and graphic shirts into your closet to throw on with your favorite pair of jeans.
With summer nearing, you have the perfect opportunity to look for fun swimsuits and vibrant sundresses. If the heat deters you from wearing the black in your wardrobe, reach for a bright colored shirt or embellished skirt instead of a white tee and shorts.
Never underestimate the power of shoes to elevate your outfits. Search for funky boots, an eye-catching pair of heels or a bold sneaker. When you are too lazy to mix and match clothes or feel like wearing something simple, you can throw on footwear that vibrantly enhances your outfit.
Play around with looks! It takes a while to develop a sense of personal style. Consider colors that work for you, whether that means paying extra attention to tones you are drawn to or filling out a color analysis quiz. Remember that curating a personalized style is usually a lengthy and uncomfortable process; still, it is important to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, even if it is just a piece of clothing.
Color does not have to be overwhelming. It can be tastefully worn in outfits, all the while making you feel a little brighter. It does not have to be expensive; honestly, you may even have more luck experimenting through small investments at flea markets and secondhand stores. Color is not something to fear, but rather, embrace. With a vibrant closet, you will find that bright clothing can improve your darkest days.
