The Twilight saga, classic and timeless

When I first heard that “Twilight” was coming back to theaters for an all day marathon, I was ready to relive my elementary school vampire phase in the most dramatic way possible. I wanted to see Edward’s sparkly skin on the big screen. But my senior retreat interfered with the showings, which meant no theater experience with no collective gasps at “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” plot twist that we all know and love.
So, naturally, I did the next best thing: I went home after Kairos and binge-watched the entire saga in one day. Five movies, roughly ten hours, a lot of snacks and the realization that watching this series as a seventeen year old hit very differently than it did when I was ten.
First of all, Bella is my age. A high school senior. While I’m trying to make it through Mr. Batch’s class and college decisions, she’d already gone through a near-death experience, a vampire army attack in “Eclipse” and an actual wedding and pregnancy in “Breaking Dawn Part 1”.
Watching it now, I couldn’t help but laugh at how dramatically her senior year played out.
Now, some thoughts on Edward. At ten, he was the ultimate dream guy, so brooding and protective. But now, realizing that he’s actually a one hundred and seven year old vampire sneaking into Bella’s room to watch her sleep, it was less romantic and more like a horror movie.
If there’s one thing I regret about missing the marathon, it’s not getting to experience the “Breaking Dawn Part 2” fight scene in theaters. I can only imagine the screaming, crying and possible riots that took place in the theater when Carlisle’s head flew off.
Rewatching Twilight as a (sometimes) fully functioning seventeen year old was equal parts nostalgic and fun. Some scenes made me roll my eyes, others made me laugh way harder than I should have and a few, like the baseball scene, still hold up as peak cinematic excellence.
And let’s be real, no matter how much you make fun of “Twilight” it will always have a death grip on your heart.
