For the most part, her passion has always been centered around her art, and she has a particular ability to incorporate her real world experiences and discoveries into her work. Art all began for her when she was quite young, simply drawing and discovering her artistic ability.
“I would say it was pretty early when I started art, like five years old,” Chen explained when asked about discovering her artistic talent. It was her realization of her skills from an early age and support from her parents that helped her foster a love for art. Her parents encouraged her to continue to explore this passion and take classes that only helped her learn and develop this unique art style which is incredibly detailed, and emphasizes a true to life quality.
“I have a very realistic style… and I like to focus on the details.” She described when asked about her style of art. For the most part, she likes working with acrylic paint and sometimes unconventional materials to convey a message through her pieces. Most recently, she began working on a project that highlights the tragedies and the shock experienced by the community from the recent Los Angeles fires.
“This was my first experience living through a natural disaster like a fire, and being affected by a wildfire,” Chen explained her inspiration for the piece. She has been collecting photos of the fires from the Louisville community, and plans to use them in her work. Christine is currently creating this piece by collecting almost all the photos taken by the Louisville community from the fires and then burning them in the center of the piece. After burning the piece, it will be complete and represent the unexpectedness and tragedy brought on by the many recent fires in the Los Angeles area.
Overall, Chen’s art captures a realistic quality, and she has been thoroughly recognized for her work. She has received two honorable mentions, two Silver Key awards, and four Gold Key regional awards from 2024 and 2025 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Not only that, but she is currently working with the Animation Club on a fundraiser to raise money for fire relief efforts. Look out for the Animation Club Charity Sale at the beginning of April! No matter where in the world she has been. From Beijing China, to La Reina High School, now at Louisville High School, Christine Chen has always been able to express herself through art.
